In fact, a study by  Glassdoor has shown the average number of UK employees taking their full annual leave is 62% with only 43% made use of 91-100% of their holiday entitlement. What’s more, 13% reported only taking 20% of their allowance. Further research found 23% of those on holiday regularly checked their emails and 15% admitted to doing some work out of fear of being behind on their return and missing targets. 20% of employees surveyed also reported that they were expected to be reachable and available to carry out some work if needed. Tips for a Digital Disconnect Respect other people’s schedules.  Don’t bother them with emails or calls when they have taken time off unless the matter is extremely urgent. Prioritize your workload.  If you absolutely have to work on your holiday, spend time on the important tasks only, and leave less important matters for when you are back in the office. Set up an auto-reply on your email.  This way, people who send you messages are alerted to the fact that you are on holiday. Provide a contact number for someone else in the office, who can be contacted if the issue is urgent. Tell your colleagues that you’ll be going away.  This may seem obvious, but alert others in your office that you are going on holiday. Sort out the most important projects before you leave, and let colleagues know that you will be unlikely to reply to work communications while away. Avoid constantly checking your devices while on holiday.  If you absolutely have to remain connected to work while on holiday, allocate a specific day, or a certain time of day when you will check and reply to emails, text messages and missed calls. Indeed, many holiday retreats all over the world are now offering “digital detoxes”, where there is no Wi-Fi signal and visitors are encouraged to hand over their electronic devices. Daily Work Breaks It’s not just time off work that’s important â€" taking a proper lunch break every day is also beneficial.   And by “proper” lunch break, we mean moving away from your desk or your office cubicle. Or, it should. Smart Companies are stepping up and are willing to help internal employees to develop their ideas. Is your company one of them? I hope so. Some of the more famous examples of Intrapreneurship include: Google allows  employees to spend 20% of their time on personal “pet” projects. W.L. Gore (creators of Gore-Tex) give employees “dabble time” of 10% of their days. Citrix â€" Inspiring Intrapreneurship within the organization and investing as needed. Additional examples of Intrapreneurship in Action Smart managers are encouraging their employees and their companies to think about IntraPreneurship. Intrapreneurship is the act of behaving like an entrepreneur while working within a large organization. Why Intrapreneurship? It’s good for the employees and for the company. There will always be people that are willing (and able â€" more on this in a moment) to jump out of the organization and become an Entrepreneur. However, not everyone has that risk profile. Not everyone is willing to jump out of the organization and be responsible for all aspects of the business sales, marketing, technical and executive duties. Not to mention raising capital, hiring employees and running the day to day aspects of a business. Employees that can make a successful run at being an IntraPreneur will Stand Out in Their Career. Especially, if they can execute on the IntraPreneur track over and over again. In fact, W.L. Gore has a model that supports this. W.L. Gore forces groups that grow to more than 200 employees to break up. Thereby forcing and re-inforcing the IntraPreneurial spirit. Who Make the Best IntraPreneurs? There is no easy answer for this. However, experience seems to be showing that mixing generations is a smart option for increasing the likelihood of success. Baby Boomers, Generation X, Millennials (aka Gen Y) and Generation Z all have different experiences and perspectives. Mixing them together can be challenging at times, but in the long run can help identify and develop products and services that are Desirable, Feasable and Viable. Employee Expectations for IntraPrenuership by Generation … and what companies can do to help them: Gen Y and Gen Z will expect it. Empower Them. Gen X and Boomers can help. Let Them. Contrary to some opinions Gen X and Boomers have a lot to offer. Encourage Them. As you start to think about yourself as an IntraPreneuer in 2015 and beyond I hope you will consider reaching out to other generations of people. You will likely be pleasantly surprised by what they can offer. Both on the younger side of the equation and the older side. 8 Travel Essentials Digital Nomads Never Leave Home Without - For those who’ve taken to the road, and are bringing their jobs with them, the quest for essential equipment never seems to end. Keeping the weight down to easily get through airports while having everything you need is no small feat after all. So, when you’re looking into your next travel destination it’s time to make sure that you’ve got these travel essentials so you’ll always be prepared. 1. High Capacity Backpack For many destinations, there’s simply no way to make sure a bulky luggage container with wheels is going to serve you well. Too much pedestrian traffic, unpaved roads, and all manner of obstructions may be in your path once you reach your destination. A backpack, on the other hand, is much easier to handle through any sort of crowd or terrain and they can carry a surprising amount of stuff. Your best bet is to look for a high-quality backpack with at least 30L of storage space. Subdividers are great for organization and most will need a padded compartment for their computers as well. The important thing is capacity and the ability to organize things the way you want them organized. Another important point: if you’re wise with your bag choice and gear, you’ll also be able to avoid carry-on fees during your travels. That’s a big bonus for most of us. 2. Photography Equipment Most digital nomads will want to carry at least a camera, but many opt for more specialized equipment to document their travels. While a phone camera is great it doesn’t necessarily provide the best picture quality when it really matters. Depending on your tastes a small, collapsible tripod, a spotting scope with camera attachment, or zoom lenses are all great options to snag beautiful pictures of your surroundings. Just make sure to keep it light enough that you don’t need a carry-on bag to haul it all. 3. Dry Bag Dry bags are a great thing to have no matter where you’re traveling. Finding one which can be folded into itself is an excellent way to carry laundry or even just add an extra layer of protection for your gear. They’re generally cheap but pretty much indispensable while you’re on the road. Just make sure to test whichever variation you go with before you have to field test it to make sure it provides an adequate level of moisture protection or you may end up with a serious mess on your hands. Portable chargers are essential for any traveler, and doubly so for those who are planning on traveling in countries where the nearest outlet may be a good bit away. Even better, you can get them with impressive mAH ratings and a streamlined profile these days. They can be an absolute lifesaver no matter what, but if you’ve got a keen eye for detail it’s a good idea to make sure that they’re reinforced and also able to charge your laptop. With those two qualities in place, you’ll be good to go, no matter where you go. 5. eReader If you’re an avid reader then you may be trying to pick which books are coming along with you. It shouldn’t be any, in all honesty, books are heavy and take up a ton of space in your bag. Instead, you should acquire a good Kindle or other eReader to bring along your passion for words. They’re generally smaller than tablets and they hold a charge for a long time so you’ll be able to read all of your favorites without the bulk and weight that paper books bring with them. For some, it’s not the same, but it’s always a reasonable substitute. 6. Cable Organizer Cable organizers are a nomad’s best friend. Most of us have an array of cables for our devices, flash drives, and other small electronics that get tangled and lost in the rest of our bag. Cable organizers solve this problem by letting you get a handy place to keep all your cables together and with some of the more specialized ones you’ll be able to keep whatever you’d like in them. UV Sterilizer One piece of gear which many nomads overlook is some form of quickly sterilizing water. While the water is generally potable in most locations the problem lies in the fact that the microbes which make it through the water treatment process generally aren’t the ones we’re used to. That can lead to a lot of GI problems while you’re out of the country. UV sterilizers can help solve this problem and most are no larger than a small flashlight, which makes them an ideal companion for those who are frequently traveling. 8. Packing Cubes Sometimes it’s the little things that count, and packing cubes can keep clothes organized and squished into a smaller space than you’d be able to achieve if you were just stuffing things in your bag. Best Careers for 2011 - Following job trends has some advantages. I report on U.S. News World Reports Best Careers article every year. (This year, I am excited to announce that Ive been invited to join U.S. News team of career bloggers starting in mid-January!) In my many years following this report, categories often do not change very much from year to year. That is a good thing for anyone using the list to make a career choice! For example, the article notes that All of the healthcare jobs on last years list have made the cut again this year, plus two new positions: massage therapist and athletic trainer. While the field of athletic training doesnt offer the sheer number of positions as nursing or dental hygiene, it outranks nearly all other healthcare occupations for expected job growth. Its important to remember that jobs on this list are not necessarily easy to land! Although jobs are cut from the list if they have a higher-than average unemployment rate, the article notes that, with 9.6% unemployment, there are still (statistically) five unemployed people for every job, compared to an average of 1.7 people for every job in the three years before the recession. Do Your Research Every job seeker should keep an eye on his or her industry and make plans for the future with an informed outlook. I like to remind readers that it’s a good idea to set a Google alert for organizations and fields of interest to you so you’ll be aware when there are newsworthy ups and downs in your market. Clearly, there are trends in industries. While there are no guarantees, keeping an eye on these surveys and data should help direct those seeking career change make their plans. Learn what you can about the number of job opportunities, salary expectations, educational requirements, job satisfaction make a list of what is important to you and conduct a personal analysis to determine a good direction for your career. Luckily, there are more and more resources every day to help you with your research. You can go old school and talk to people you know or people they know via informational interviews. Or, expand your networking circle by using Twitter to research your job, LinkedIn to connect with new colleagues, Facebook (via BranchOut or Jibe) and Quora to meet new people who may have advice, information or recommendations for you. Learn what blogs are popular and respected in your niche (I like to use Alltop.com as a great resource) and find out what your mentors are saying. Find them on Twitter (WeFollow.com is my favorite list for Twitter) and learn who they talk to, what conferences they attend (and what they think of the speakers). Hop on a Twitter chat to connect with people in your targeted industry. Before you know it with skill and persistence you can become one of them! (Read this story of someone who has decided to lead the way in his industry, even if his colleagues are not already joining him on social media.) Clearly, there are many, many ways to learn what everyone is saying and most importantly to insert yourself into the conversations (via participating in social media, meeting local colleagues, attending professional conferences, etc.) to really get to know about a field.
